Update on Shipping & U.S. Tariffs
Hi everyone,
It's been quite the month since the last Kickstarter update, so it's time to bring you up to speed on the status of the rewards.
U.S. Tariffs & Rewards
TL;DR: We had to prioritize U.S. shipments due to tariffs. The last U.S. rewards were sent out on March 23. We resumed the normal non-US shipping queue last week, on March 24.
The United States has imposed major new tariffs on imports. The most considerable change for us is the overhaul of the "de minimis" system, which takes effect on May 2. To clear U.S. rewards through customs before the deadline - and avoid an extreme cost increase - we had to ship all U.S. rewards by March 23. This meant pausing shipments to all other countries for a few weeks.
We made an emergency trip to Shenzhen to oversee the process and ensure everything went out on time. By last Wednesday, we managed to ship almost all U.S. rewards, packing the last trucks, just before the deadline.
There are 374 U.S. shipments that didn't make it out in time. This wasn't due to capacity but because we couldn't reach some backers - despite trying every channel: Kickstarter email, shipping email, and Kickstarter DMs.
For those 374 shipments, we ask for a little more patience. We're not yet sure how things will play out. If nothing changes in the coming weeks, or if you prefer not to wait, please reach out and we'll arrange a refund.
New U.S. Backers
A few weeks ago, we effectively disabled new U.S. rewards due to the tariff uncertainty. Instead, we added a $1 "reservation" reward so U.S. backers can hold a spot in the queue once things stabilize.
Shipping Status
December, January, February Batches
Less than 58 (0.24%) of shipments are still pending. These are mostly orders needing manual handling.
March and April Batches
As of today, April 28:
- March Batch: 1,993 shipments left (18% remaining)
- April Batch: 2,607 shipments left (36% remaining)
In total, 4,658 shipments are still to be dispatched (14% overall). We're dispatching units daily and will continue doing so.
Software Update
Since the last update, we launched 0.3.9, where we exclusively focused on improving the connection to the JetKVM, both on the cloud and locally:
- Rewritten connection stack and improved debugging
- Migrated to WebSockets for WebRTC signaling
- Better retry mechanism
- Proper failure modes for known connection issues
- Informative loading screens with real connection information
- Improved logging to pinpoint exactly where things fail
The next software update is also starting to take shape, and work on keyboard macros, better network settings, HTTPS support, proper relative mouse mode, and much more has been finished and is awaiting testing and release.
